This looks like what happened when the rotary dial phone went to the fabric of pulse dialing. The problem with switch anything today is people want information anywhere .. Fixed, portable, Mobile, and Vehicular from any number of devices. Edge technologies are changing faster than 300 foot at a time switch anything can keep up while virtualization and cloud or centralized data center comes back into vogue. The next reality is fiber point to multipoint distribution via the aggregation core and the complete elimination of distribution switches.

Apple have really dropped the ball in my opinion. They used to think different, macs just worked, and I could set my mac up to reliably do what I wanted it to, just the way I wanted. With Lion (I am still with snowleopard 10.6.8) things got bad, and Mountain Lion doesn't make them much better. Now so many little things have changed, it's not the reliable workhorse it used to be and it doesn't just work as much as it should. And more and more I find myself wondering if they're even thinking at all when they work on these updates.

The latest OS versions seem to dictate HOW I use the computer, but it shouldn't be so.

They've lost the plot as far as I can see. RIP Jobs, RIP Apple.

Brandon,

Nice illustrations and thanks for explaining it very clearly. I do have one question though. How does the initial exchange "Are you a Brocade switch happen"? What happens if I am not connected to a Brocade switch and the neighbor switch does not respond kindly or most likely not respond at all? Is there some kind of timeout or some amount of retries built in? Sounds like the Brocade switch will wait for an awful amount of time before it transitions the port to a edge port?

I can't wait to see your posts on the other topics.

Thanks again
Casey.
